Big Gull Lake

Big Gull Lake is approximately 24 kilometres or 14 miles long. The average depth is 12.9 feet and reaches depths of over 84 feet. Big Gull Lake is a large lake with its many inlets, island and bays provides the ideal environments for many fresh water fish. Pickerel (Walleye), Large and Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Yellow Perch and Muskie have been stocked in the lake.

LOCATION:

Big Gull Lake is located approximately 30.5 kilometres northwest of Kaladar.

Maximum Depth - 25.9 metres / 84.9 feet
Mean Depth - 3.96 metres / 12.9 feet
Surface Area - 5840 acres

QUALITY:

In general the water quality in Big Gull Lake remains good. The average secchi depth for the past 25 years is 4.2 metres, indicating that Big Gull is a moderately enriched or mesotrophic lake. Directly related to water clarity is the amount of nutrients, in particular phosphorous, entering the lake. There was a decrease in phosphorous at the main basin station from 1975 to 1999. Chlorophyll a is a measure of the algal density in the lake. The average chlorophyll adensities in 1999 was 1.8 micrograms/litre, indicating a low algae density for Big Gull Lake.

ACCESS:

Three Marine Access Points are available around the lake. The first access point is located on the east end of the lake, 1.6 kilometres south of Coxvale. The second access point is located on the southwest end of the lake, northwest of Kirk Cove. The last access point is located on the west end of the lake, east of Harlowe.

Shore Guidlines

Certain types of docks and boathouses built on shore lands require work permits from the Ministry of Natural Resources. Examples of docks and boathouses that DO or DO NOT require Ministry of Natural Resources work permits are listed on the Ministry Web sites. If a  work permit is needed for a specific project, he or she should contact the local Ministry of Natural Resources office.

Boating Licence

All Boaters now require a licence.

New Boating Licence tests now apply.

Please note a $250 dollar fine is levied against boaters who do not have their licence.
